  • A Matter of Perspective

I'm trying to write this down this morning before I forget what was said. Sadly I have already kind of forgotten. It was amazing and made me smile. Sammy woke up and gave us a rare show of sunshine. He is currently down stairs screaming that he isn't going today with the rest of us for the hike we planned. He is refusing again and non-compliant. I think the function of his behaviors lately are control. He cannot control the fact that his school is changing, his teachers will change, and his aid may even change, so he tries to control other things. More Here...
  • Autism Light: Shinji Tejima

Shinji Tejima is from Fukuoka, Japan. He works at the Showa Studio Automobile Repair Shop. Shinji built a very expensive motorcycle that is a replica of a famed motorcycle that was featured in the 1988 Japanese animated science-fiction movie Akira. Rather than let it sit safe in his garage, he is riding it across the country of Japan to raise funds for a Japanese autism support group called the Bokura Company. Shinji Tejima is an Autism Light for riding this special bike across Japan for autism awareness and to raise funds for an autism charity.More Here...
  • Autism Numbers Are Up...How can you help?

I've been catching the stories online about the latest CDC numbers for autism: 1 in 88 children; 1 in 54 boys. In some regions of the United States, the numbers are even more alarming, such as 1 in 47 children in Utah. Many people seem to think that better detection is responsible for a big portion of these higher numbers.

I agree that better diagnosis and detection are boosting the numbers, but that does not address the initial cause of autism. It seems logical to me that the growth in the number of children diagnosed with autism would not be so steadily climbing without some other underlying causes, such as environmental factors or genetic factors.More Here...

  • Having Nana For Dinner?

Saturday, I was telling Gabe, that we were having Nana for dinner on Sunday. As soon as those words came out of my mouth, I began to giggle. I knew exactly what Gabe would say next. More Here...

  • 1:88 and not an epidemic per the CDC?

1:88 and not an epidemic per the CDC? That is because they would have a HUGE backlash if they acknowledged anything environmentally was contributing to this enormous spike in the autism diagnosis.

  • No Child Left Behind, Fact or Fallacy

Can education for the autistic be improved? I am trying to spread autism awareness, lend a voice to topics that are interesting to people who are either autistic or have friends or family that are. I have 3 kids on the autism spectrum, I have asperger’s as well. My kids all struggle in school and I am concerned that they will not graduate and if so what have they really learned. I was quite the opposite, school academics came easy, it was the social and PE related things that were difficult. I was, in a way left behind. I might have skipped a few grades but due to my teachers and their concern or is it lack of concern or understanding I was never allowed to skip any grades. My elementary years were a joke for me. I could read as well as I do now at 43 at 8, and my math skills were about the same as well, but I was never asked to skip grades mostly due to my teachers not really understanding or “getting” me. In that vein of thought here is a fine article by Mari Nosal with regards to her thoughts on the so called “No child left behind idea”More Here...
