  • Lost in New York City

Our son, who has mild/moderate autism, was in the 8th grade. The rite of passage from middle school to high school is the –drum roll, please—8th grade trip. I knew the kids in special education sometimes got to go, so I was pleased when Luke’s teacher told me she thought he should go to Savannah with the others.

  • The Importance of Our Calendars

This post is by Lena Rivkin, MFA, is an artist and graphologist living in Los Angeles. She has an adult brother named Phillip who has autism.

I sometimes wonder if my brother and I are single-handedly keeping the printed yearly calendar business alive.  Honestly, I buy 52 calendars every year.  The people at Staples or the 99 Cent store must find me very odd, purchasing 2012 Calendars in October, November and December. The good news is they are much cheaper at that time of year! More Here...

  • Scapegoating in the Aftermath of Sandy Hook

Despite a number of clarifications in The New York Times and on ABC NewsNBC News, and CNN that Asperger’s is not a predisposing factor for premeditated violence, the spurious association of Asperger’s with the violence in Newtown, CT is still strong. In part, the media is responsible for not having clarified early on that yes, Adam Lanza shot 27 people and yes, Adam Lanza was apparently autistic, and no, one had nothing to do with the other. Such failures were rife. For example, in exploring a possible explanation for the shooting, Dr. Xavier Amador opined on Piers Morgan Tonight that people with Asperger’s are missing an essential element of humanity: More Here...

  • Autism Shines

I posted yesterday about my worries because of the autism association with the Newtown shooter. It was a rough day. It wasn't just that one status update. It was several facebook pages that kept coming up. As soon as they'd crop up, someone would post them, then the rest of us would report them to get them taken down. One was called "Cure Asperger's, Save Children From Psychokillers." I sent him a message, and he wrote back (it's just called "Facebook Page because the page was taken down):

  • Asperger's Syndrome Unfairly Linked to Newton School Shooting

The aftermath of the Newtown Connecticut shooting tragedy has spawned a wide range of questions regarding gun control and school safety. One of the questions I find myself asking is why the media is frequently associating Adam Lanza's Asperger's Syndrome diagnosis with the horrific event. I'm not the only one asking that question.

  • Etiquette and Proper Behaviors

Recently, I’ve been reading a few articles where Autistics would do or say things that society would generally consider wrong, or bad behavior, and other people would actually defend them, stating that it’s one of the challenges of Autism.

I have an issue with this.

  • The Unsent Holiday Letter

I was undecided about sending out holiday cards at all this year. 2012 has been a particularly difficult year for me personally and the thought of stuffing a hundred or so envelopes with a picture of our smiling faces seemed a bit like a lie. No way was I going to be able to write a cheery holiday letter to go with it. For me, this year has been filled with bouts of depression and anxiety. I’ve been daunted and overwhelmed by the task of parenting our teenager, our son on the spectrum, and our very feisty, strong-willed Kindergartener. More Here...
