Earplugs and Hand Flapping
I'm looking for suggestions on my sons sensitivity to sound associated with his PDD-NOS. Recently his hand flapping has increased significantly and his teacher was wondering if maybe giving him something to keep his hands occupied would help.
Well this morning she brought to my attention that maybe it was because of him eating in the cafeteria this year. He has been complaining about the sound and acts nervous where he is to the point of clenching up.
She mentioned the possibility of using ear plugs for lunch but I'm not certain if he'd wear them. I don't want him anymore uncomfortable than he already is. The two (increased hand flapping and the over stimulation of sound) may not be related.
Has anyone else had this dilemma?

My son has Asperger's and does the hand flapping. I never noticed that it was related to noise. He usually does it when overstimulated. It could be excitement over an online video he's watching or even seeing a squirrel. I don't know if the earplugs would help because even in the cafeteria he would still be in with a lot of other kids. Maybe some old school type headphones would be better? To muffle the noise and it would be easier for him to put on and off.
I actually had to look up that term, "Hand Flapping." I remember doing that when I was young. I think I did it cause I was frustrated. Later I learned to bang my head which released endorphines, and - well, I'm not allowed to do it today according to my doctor, but sometimes I still feel like it.
You are mentioning earplugs ? I'm confused as to how this effects hand flapping ?
