  • Trays of Bittersweet Chocolate

You know those dark chocolates (I get mine at Trader Joe's) that come in fanciful seashell shapes in the partitioned plastic tray? Today I feel like one of them that was left in a hot car, mellltted to an unrecognizable liquid then chilled again only to resume the imprint of its original design. No matter how hot the car gets, that little tray

Charlotte Mason had a phrase I learned while homeschooling that rails of character. The disciplines of faith--prayer, worship, and study--are those rails for me. So are the various tethers and structure or framework or scaffolding that keep me in routine. Jim is home (hoorah!); my steady cleaning lady of 8 years arrived this morning (ahhhhh!); Allie's still in China but at least 3 legs of the tripod are back in place. Charlotte calls them train tracks. I prefer trays of bittersweet chocolate. Same concept. I am back on track! Melting into the shape and calling--life--that God has designed for me. Leaning happened by needed Him, acknowledging the heat and calling on others to cool me down. Stepping out of the hot car and into some cool air, if you will.

I realize how important those are to maintaining health. If we exist in body, mind, and spirit, we must take care of all three. Those three realms relate and cross over. I've experienced wounding in the mind that affects the body and healing in the spirit that impacts the mind. We are all connected. So often though--whether in ourselves as caregivers or in autism interventions for our kids, we treat the body and mind but not

The trip to the Healing Rooms was restorative to say the least.

    My favorites are bittersweet.

Thank you for your heartfelt comments and prayers. Community is good and blogs are communities. I walked, more like panted behind, a dear friend this morning. We "do" the stairs at the beach on Mondays; she runs, I climb, all while trying to converse. I personally think sitting with a chocolate croissant would be easier but try to remain open to new ways of doing things and appreciate her unique strength of discipline. Between heaving breaths I mentionned that Reid's triennial IEP is tomorrow morning at 8. Dear as she is in many ways, I realized how valuable my blog community is when she asked me, "what's that?"

It is impossible to explain, even in 9 flights and a cool down walk (though I tried), what an IEP is. You really have to be there. I know many of you have and that makes your comments credible and our struggles mutual. I like to think you are the other chocolates in the box with me! Now doesn't that sound yummy!?! Here's to not getting devoured:)

    • About Me: I consider motherhood a profession. My husband and I adopted boy-girl twins at birth which gave me full-time employment and job security. I homeschooled them for 5 years which elicited admiration, shock and pity from the neighbors mostly because by then my son had an autism diagnosis and some obvious behavior challenges. I learned enough to wonder if there is a PhD equivalency test I could take. My theme song was "What I Did for Love!" In theory, an omnipotent God is my power source. In reality, I have unplugged from Him for gaps of time and suffered for the power loss. Autism Unplugged is my attempt to give voice to the spiritual lessons I'm learning because God has allowed autism to define our journey. Have Book Will Travel is a diversion from the emotional intensity of the other blog. I am a wannabe librarian. I love books. I love to read them in situ, reenact them, and rely on them as a springboard for experiencing the world. When we travel, preparation, repetition and visuals are
