The Dress Saga
Doesn’t Annie look gorgeous, all dressed up to go to the wedding.
A stark contrast to two days earlier when I purchased the dress:

Annie does not do change easily, she does not like new things, so when I realised on the Wednesday that her shoulders were too broad for the party dress she had worn all year, I knew we were in trouble.The dress and jacket I found fit our budget with room for a nice pair of boots and new leggings.
I thought I’d done well, it was in her favourite colour – black, the fabric was velvet and felt very nice to touch, the seams did not feel rough or scratch, it was a fitted cut which Annie seems to prefer.
:: sigh ::
She hated it, there was many tears, attempts to distract Annie with new boots resulted in boots being thrown at my head. Needless to say Annie did NOT get new boots.
We came home, Annie vowing to tear the dress to pieces while we slept, lengthy rants of “I never wear dresses, I hate dresses, I just want to wear my old dress, I hate all dresses, why can’t I wear my old dress” finally calmed to sobs and then snores. She was asleep.
Husband and I pondered what to do, the next day with a rested and calmer Annie I explained that at weddings people dressed up to show the bride and groom how happy and excited they were. Black cargo pants and a black hoodie would not cut it as wedding attire no matter how much she loved to wear them. That dressing up for a wedding was custom / tradition and it would after all only be at the very most half a day as the wedding was at 2pm.
Annie was horrified “12 hours! I have to wear that dress for 12 hours!” which side tracked us onto a discussion about how I only meant half a day of daylight hours, not half a 24 hour day.
In the end I offered to pay her to wear the dress, $20, it seemed a reasonable compromise to keep the peace. Then Annie put it on, I hemmed it to a length she was happy with and hoped my quick hand stitching would hold.
All up Annie wore the dress for maybe 90 minutes, as she very happily told everyone who would listen, “The wedding only took 30 minutes, not half a day”.
I’m not sure what the lesson is here but at least Annie loves the new jacket.
