• Patience, Art and Autism

  

  
  

  Patience is not something that comes easily to Heidi, she is such a bouncy ‘in the now’ kid and time is still a very relative concept.

  So when we got this fantastic painted window sticker kit from Colorific I was rather daunted to see that there was a fair bit of waiting involved.

  We opened up the kit on Saturday afternoon, me thinking we’d be able to play with it whilst Uncle P and Daddy rewired our internet, I should have read the instructions first.
  

  The first step is to trace out the fairy pictures onto the clear tracing plastic with the black window sticker paint.

  I was less than impressed with my tracing job and could only see the flaws, Heidi however thought it was ‘perfick’ but had no desire to try and trace one herself.

  We then waited overnight for the paint to dry – with frequent checks during the evening by Heidi to see ‘is dry yet?’

  Meanwhile Annie had spent the afternoon very pleasantly making her own fairy diary and then using left over supplies to decorate her slippers for the grade two sleepover.

  The next morning I gave Heidi the coloured window sticker paints to fill in the traced pictures. She did blobs of paint in the middle of each picture and it took lots of reminders to ‘go slow and draw in the lines’ for Heidi to fill in the pictures – the paint had to go right to the edge of the traced lines to fill in the sticker, otherwise they would come of the sheet separately.

  Going slow and drawing in the lines is something Heidi is practicing at school too, she is so busy trying to get to the end and do the next thing that often she does very messy work due to rushing.

  Once Heidi had finished painting her stickers she wanted to put them on the window straight away, but I persuaded her that she needed to wait again for the colours to dry… and once she had run off to play I spent some time filling in any gaps around the edges of the pictures.

  The next morning we had great fun putting up all the window stickers we had made and Heidi thought her fairy window was just ‘perfick’.

  We did find one set that Heidi had painted the colours on the opposite side to the black outlines – too much rushing and not enough going slow and thinking about what she was doing. I was worried Heidi would be upset by those stickers not being right but she thought it was great to be able to go back and paint more colours, this time on the right side of the sheet and have extra stickers.

  A great lesson in patience and the rewards that can come from waiting. I think we need to make time to do some more painting of things that require painting between layers.
