The IEP Wars: 2012 The Battle is Set.........Last Year Recap....Get Your Light Sabers/Wands Ready....
HIGH SCHOOL CONFERENCE ROOM.DAD IS IN FULL HOCKEY GOALIE GEAR....... My amazing wife (separate blog post on having an angelic wife),Eli and myself walk into what was Eli's first IEP meeting in high School.
Our experiences with IEP meetings prepared us for what was to come, so we governed ourselves accordingly.
My wife brought all her well prepared documentation and I wore a full hockey uniform including the goalie helmet/face mask.
There they were, surrounding us with a conference table filled with staring eyeballs looking us up and down as though we were muggles and they were the Malfoys.
This Hogwarts reference is in every way meant to alert my dear readers to the fact that Eli is, in our opinion, an Awetee Knight(heightened magical skills on the spectrum) as many on the spectrum are, and should be treated accordingly
So, there we were,Grouchy teachers, in a hurry to get coffee, rid of us and this whole IEP meeting out of the way so they could get back to their classrooms and tenure, as quick as possible….…..Except….. For some notable Nawtee(special allies of the Awetees) teachers, that truly know the deal and care.
So,Key objective is:
Be certain what you are saying and agreeing to is being typed into the record, not the complete opposite.
Example:
Mom:“Eli still needs and aide.”
The Report:“Eli will get along famously without needing an aide.”
Mom:“He does need an aide on the bus.”
The Report: “Parents feel an aide on the bus is not necessary.”
Mom: “Eli does very well with assisted technology and would like to continue with it.”
The Report: “Eli finds assisted technology to be useless and therefore declines the offer.”
In other words:
Don't blink,Don't go to the bathroom,Don't sign anything, Don't blow your nose and Don't take off your hockey mask until you read what was just typed, so you can change back to everything you had just verbally agreed on, not what a bean counter with “normee” kids wants.”
