Familiar Faces in Unusual Places
Yesterday I had a meeting with the school district to discuss placement for my daughter for kindergarten. My daughter was at the meeting, in an effort to show the district who she is, and what type of needs she has.
And yet again, my daughter showed me something.
This setting was completely unfamiliar to her. Yet, she did not stress. She did not notice me at first when her teacher brought her, because she was scanning her surroundings. When she did see me though, she was her usual jubilant self when ever she sees me! Happy and lovey, kisses and her attempt at hugs. Smiling as she stared directly into my eyes. She just melts my heart.
As we all sat down to start the meeting, her teacher had her seated in a chair with some activities for her to do. She has a hard time sitting still, so after a while she would want to get down and walk around.
When she did, I noticed her going over to her O.T. and Speech teachers, showing major signs of recognition with them. Smiling and grabbing their hands, it was a wonderful site to see. She spotted where I was sitting, and came over and did the same thing.
To know that she is not only recognizing people that she knows and trusts in familiar settings, but in unusual settings as well, is a phenomenal feat for her. She’s gone from the girl who would look at people as only an obstacle to move around, to the girl who looks at people to see if they are someone that she knows!
Everyday, that little girl shows me more of her personality, her strengths, and her progress. She’s come a long way, and we still have a long way to go. But, all of these little moments are just the many steps towards her success. I look forward to all of the steps, good and bad. Because my love for that little girl is never ending.
