  • There is no Black and White

After I took this picture, I started thinking about the term ‘black and white,’ and how it related to Autism. The truth is that there really is no ‘black and white.’ Everyone with Autism is built a little bit differently from the next. Just as those without Autism are.

One person may have a love of music, while the next might be frightened to death of it. One may have a fear of water, while the next has a fear of being out of it. One may love to take in every texture that they come across, while the next may not like to be touched at all. And then all of these little quirks may change dramatically from day to day in one person, while it may stay the same for a lifetime in another.

As the mother of a daughter with Autism, I see the range of differences between her, other children with Autism, and even in ‘normal’ children. And in seeing this, I realize just how big the ‘GRAY’ area is.

While our life seems to be a routine type randomness at times, I love the gray area of Autism. The gray area is where our lives are lived everyday.

In it lies the personality, hopes, and dreams of my daughter, and any other person on the Spectrum. In it lies the ability to overcome, to see the world in a different (and possibly better) perspective. In it lies our lessons as parents, caregivers, grandparents, and teachers. Lessons of hope, determination, grace, and compassion.

And the most important part of the gray area is LOVE. The ability to love unconditionally, without precedence or prejudice, without doubt, and without control. It’s what gives us the courage and the strength to face another day.

The gray area is actually a colorful and bright place. A happy place. An ‘in the moment’ place. I am happy to live in the gray area with my daughter.
