ASD and being Bilingual
Although I was born here, I spoke Spanish first. My parents wanted me to speak Spanish so I would be able to speak to the family whom some lived in Mexico.
It was fine, until I got to school. I was placed in ESL classes up until 6th grade. My brother didn't speak much Spanish so he was out of the classes by 3rd. I hated it. I hated being taken out of my classroom to another class with other students who also were bilingual. I understand its to help me, but they also took me out of Math, and Science classes. To this day, I am not any good at Math. I needed tutors, I needed extra help in college.
And now to our daughter; when she was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at 2.5 years of age, the Nuerologist said for us to keep it at one language. She didn't speak at all, so I can imagine how confusing and harder it would be. So now she speaks only English and has picked up Spanish words along the way. I would love for her to speak Spanish but once she has mastered English, she still has a delay, she still has articulation issues.
This is our number one fight between the Husband and I; we are at odds. He wants her to speak Spanish very well, not spanglish. And I want her to speak English, well actually I want her to speak period. I want us to be on the same boat.
Those in bilingual, trilingual homes - how do you deal with this?
I know her picking up the language is inevitable, but how do you deal with your Spouse who is adamant about it?
