13 Things We’ve Done as Part of Heidi’s Sensory Diet
I’m joining in Thursday 13 with 13 items that have been in the past or are currently on Heidi’s Sensory Diet.
1. Wrapping my arms around Heidi just under her arms and swinging her body from side to side, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock.
2. Alternating snacks of crunchy foods (like apples), with snacks of chewy foods (like dried apple).
3. Bouncing on trampoline for 10 minutes.
4. Spinning in her egg chair, go one way 10 times, then unwind her by spinning in the opposite direction 10 times.
5. Picking up buttons with her toes.
6. Wheelbarrow walking – holding Heidi’s legs in the air while she walks on her hands.
7. Get Heidi to carry baskets of washing from one room to another.
8. Milk drinks thickened with yogurt and drunk through a straw.
9. Dry towels on the washing line so the fabric is rough – use these towels to dry Heidi off.
10. Blowing bubbles, whistles, balloons for oral motor input.
11. Making Heidi into a sausage in the middle of a blanket & cushion breadroll.
12. Sitting on, rolling over, being squished by a large yoga ball.
13. Jumping like a kangaroo, crawling like wombat, slithering like a snake.

Those are some fun-sounding ideas. I'm an OT student, so I'm collecting lists like that. Any in particular that are especially helpful?
@Katja88@xanga - The joint compressions were really helpful. Also the kangaroo hopping and other movements you can do while grocery shopping - a child hopping up the grocery store aisle is not great but it is better than a screaming meltdown in the grocery store or an absconding child.
The tick tocks were great when Heidi was younger but she is too tall and too heavy to do them now.
I think working with your child in the way that helps develop that particular child is a lost art and I am glad to see that you work so hard for your children...
@Katja88@xanga - Combining a series of 3's like High five, Knuckle Bump, and shake hands. Verbal drills like counting, abc's, and a favorite song. Squeeze Hug, Chin Pressure, and top of the Head pressure. Upper Extremity work like Wheel barrow walk, Headstand, Summersault. Therapy sets like Bridging with ball, Pushups on ball, and sitting ball bounces. Always have definite start and stops, counting down verbally; with reps, or hold times, or sets.
