Secret Friends
Last night, I had a book signing in an area close to where my son, Brandon lives. A lovely couple came up to me and said, “We are friends with your son”. I spoke to them for a few minutes and was happy to hear all the nice things they had to say about Brandon. As I have mentioned many times before it is still extremely difficult for Brandon to make friends, due to his lack of social skills, but I knew in what I call his “secret life” he did have friends.
He doesn’t want me to know about his friends, and being thirty-seven years old, he is an adult and wants some privacy, and he doesn’t want his mother to know everything he does. I couldn’t agree more. I am respectful of Brandon and how he lives his life. My motto is, as long is he is not getting hurt or hurting someone else I need to stay out of his private business just as I would with my older son who is “neurotypical”.
It makes me happy to know he has people to be with who are kind and caring. I have noticed as he continues to develop, he attracts a better circle of friends. That is most encouraging.
