  • A Hitting Question

An example of a child who has severe autism and one of the big problems is his aggresion and seizures and has been on constant medication....

A kid who is bothered by loud noises, large crowds, and certain lights. Who also gets bothered if u take them out of their routine and comfort zone..

okay now.. think of the child being put in 3 different school and everyone constantly taking them out because they can't handle their type of autism.. it's hard.

So now lets say he was put in a school and later they send a notebook with a letter written on a piece of paper saying..

"Your child was transferred to a school that can handle his type of aggressiveness and autism and starting Monday he is no longer in this school.."

ONE thing for sure no one ever called the parents to say, "Hey we need to have a meeting about your child or there is a problem and we need to speak.." no instead they write on a piece of paper saying your child cant come in anymore.

Ok.. so then the child starts school at the new place...

Next thing u know... u get a call to come get the child.. who hit the teacher.. and the child is now suspended for 10 days and there needs to be a meeting the next day..

man.. what a sad day and thinking what will happen to my child right?

so then.. later on you get a phone call from one of your friends who's daughter happens to go to the same school that your autistic child is currently taking a program at... and says

"My daughter said that she saw the teacher hit your child first and then your child hit the teacher back..."

    ????????

    What happens now???!?!?!

I AM SOOO UPSET ABOUT IT BECAUSE A CHILD WITH SEVERE AUTISM AREN'T FULLY AWARE OF WHAT THEY DO.. AND WE AREN'T SURE WHAT CAUSES THEM TO BE AGGRESSIVE AND HIT THEMSELVES...

DOES IT GIVE A RIGHT FOR A TEACHER TO HIT THE STUDENT? I DON'T THINK SO

THE TEACHER IS FULLY AWARE OF THEIR ACTIONS... AND THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO BE TRAINED ON THAT KIND OF SITUATION..

BUT IF THEY THINK THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IT BECAUSE THEY CANT SPEAK..

DOES IT STILL MAKE IT RIGHT?

WHAT SHOULD WE DO??? I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START..

I JUST KNOW I AM SOOOO UPSET...

This must be a really hard time for you. It makes me angry that the system treats kids this way. You must report what you heard about the teacher hitting the student. You need to go to the principal, occupational therapist, director of special ed, speech language pathologist-tell them about this and they should refer you to the procedure used to report this. I'm not sure if you should go to the police first, or if the school has a system in place about reporting abuse/neglect situations.
Regardless of whether or not the teacher hit the student, it makes me furious that schools are treating a child this way due to behaviors rather than talking to you about the behaviors, med changes, triggers, frequency, etc. and trying to develop ways to lessen behaviors. Sometimes, a child's aggressive actions are less a reflection of the pathology, but more of a reflection of the quality of care and their reaction to negative situations.

Wow, that's just sick. It's not cool AT ALL to hit a kid because they've got any type of problems. You've got to report it, that stuff has got to stop.

I agree whole-heartedly with the last two commenters. And if that stuff about the teacher is true, I hope something really comes of it.

I'd probably bust a cap in the bitch's ass, but that's just me. Not like you can go to the cops now- not that going to the cops is going to solve anything anyway- since there's no evidence. All you have is the kid that saw it, and who's going to believe her? It's pretty easy to cap someone and get away with it.

First of all NO MATTER HOW YOUR CHILD ACTS a teacher has NO RIGHT to hit a child. If she can't handle the children she should not be a teacher --- I am beyond sick of these teachers who need to grow up and stop being so selfish. Yes it's difficult -- but if you can't handle it find a new profession. If I were you I would be beyond angry.

go talk to the principal! Tell them you have heard a different story and if it comes down to it go to the school board. No teacher is allowed to hit a kid and that is rediculas. Ask that parent if they can have the kid explain that she saw the teacher hit the kid first. I don't think that little girl be lying to her mother about that and if the school principal doesn't believe you, then go a step higher.

    WTF is with teachers today?
Even 10 years ago they were screwed up.
No its not right for a teacher to hit your child or any child.
No its not right for a teacher to pick on a child who has a learning disablity. But yes it does happen And its a very sick way of teaching.

I think you need to report this "teacher" ( is this person even that?) more like a sick individual.
I think you need to find an amazing special school for your child. Somekind of wonderful school that understands disablitiys for what they are. Not something to be ashamed of. But disABILITY. A disability is something that hinders someone in one way but enables them to learn in a different way.

Sweety dont you give up trying to help your child. You and your family deserve the best. Its not easy in this world. But you will find your way.

If the girl is willing to be a witness, I'd file a complaint about the teacher with the principal or some higher up at the school. This shouldn't be tolerated, and the teacher should have to be held responsible if he hit your child first. In that case, your child also shouldn't be punished.

  • ohletitbe@xanga

It needs to be reported, if the little girl is willing to give her statement!

I agree, please report this and realize the teacher is wrong and very stressed. My compassion and prayers go out to you. I hope you get a therapist who can suggest ideas or find alternative ways to educate your child -this is very frustrating and again must change. Please know you have lots of support from parents and myself a licensed psychologist who has a family member who is autistic. God bless and good luck.

@mommashannon@xanga - "First of all NO MATTER HOW YOUR CHILD ACTS a teacher has NO RIGHT to hit a child. If she can't handle the children she should not be a teacher "

Actually, IF the child attacks the teacher first (which did not happen in this case, according to the eyewitness!) THEN the teacher who was attacked has EVERY RIGHT to defend himself or herself INCLUDING HITTING BACK if that's what it takes to stay safe (for example, if the child is a teenager who is bigger than the teacher, the police can't arrive in time to stop the attack, etc.).

If she or he can't handle being hit, beaten, raped, strangled, stabbed, shot, etc. by the students then she or he still should be a teacher.
