• Shania Twain and My Autistic Boy

  

  The first thing I told my son’s teacher, when we met, was that my son is extremely hard to motivate. When he doesn’t want to do a task, he won’t do it. No matter what. Unless you have the right motivator. What is that for him? Why, it’s country diva Shania Twain. Her Greatest Hits CD, to be exact. My son loves it, and loves her.

  Don’t you just love it when teachers actually listen to you? I do. My son’s teacher listened to me, and incorporated Shania Twain as a reward for completing tasks. Shania Twain is helping my son a lot. His teacher says he has started to make the connection between completing a task and hearing Shania Twain sing. He is actually starting to do some academic work for her. I am so excited.

  The fact that my son finally has a teacher that can reach him, is beyond words. The fact that she is connecting to him so early on in the school year makes me excited at the prospects of what he will learn this year. His teacher sends home notes everyday. For the most part, they are all encouraging. He’s not perfect. He has his bad days, but he seems to be having more good days now. And I owe it all to Shania Twain and my son’s teacher.

   

  It makes a huge difference in an autistic child’s experience at school, when the teacher “get’s it.” You know what I mean. When she understands autism. When she takes the time to understand the child. When she listens to the parents. When she is willing to work with your child.

  I look forward to reading the notes from my son’s teacher. I feel less stressed out, this time around, with having my son back in public school. My son also seems to be happier. He goes to school in the morning, without any problems. I have so much hope for progress in all areas. I think this is going to be a breakthrough year for my son.
