  • Mom Bloggers Turn Their Backs on Autism

I am frustrated at the lack of support from the mom blogger community for Blogging For Autism on November 1, 2010. When I decided to do this, it was to get as many mom bloggers to post one article on November 1 to spread autism awareness. This is not meant for autism only bloggers. It is for all bloggers to educate their readers about autism.

One of the reasons I was given, by a mom blogger, for her not participating was that it isn’t relevant for her readers. Really? Last year, the rate of autism was 1 in 150 children diagnosed with autism. This year, it is 1 in 110. The rate of children being diagnosed with autism is rising. If you do not have a child with autism, chances are that someone you know does. This is an issue that everyone should be concerned with.

Before my son was diagnosed, I didn’t know anything about autism. I didn’t feel the need to know anything, because it didn’t affect me. Big mistake! Now I am raising a child with autism, and face that kind of thinking every day. It’s no wonder that we have a hard time getting help. Out of sight, out of mind seems to be the general view among those that do not have a child with autism. This makes things even more difficult for us.

This lack of awareness, and support, doesn’t only affect the parents of an autistic child. It affects the children, too. More and more, it is affecting them tragically. You can read articles I have written about crimes against autistic children and see for yourself an alarming trend developing. Here are only a few articles about recent crimes against autistic children:

Denise Snyder Kills 9 Year Old Grandson

8 Year Old Boy Has Mouth Duct Taped At School

    Parents Give Up Autistic Child

Cumberland County Teacher Breaks 5 Year Old’s Arm

Mother of Autism Son Murder Suicide

There are many more. Lack of autism awareness and support contribute to these horrendous crimes. You can help. If you are a mom blogger, commit to participating in Bloggers Unite For Autism. Help your readers understand the autistic child. Help them to understand autism.

You don’t know anything about autism? Take a walk in our shoes, back when we didn’t know anything. Our doctor’s weren’t much help. The internet is where we received most of our information. Let your fingers do the walking across the keyboard. Search on autism. Search on autism symptoms. Search on raising an autistic child. The information is out there. Share a few things you learn with your readers.

This is an issue relevant for all readers.

I agree with you in theory that other blogger moms should do what they can to raise awareness. However, if they know nothing of autism, wouldn't it be better if they participated by reading the blogs of those who do? To educate themselves by reading those participating in Autistics Speaking Day and the other events? The reason I ask is because if a blogger mom knows nothing of autism, what she might share could be bad advice, bad information, etc.

I agree with Heather, share if you are aware otherwise a quick "google of autism" and you will increase your awareness pretty quickly. Don't wait until the need arises when you may have to support someone with autism in their lives, be aware now. I am sure you will be glad you did as soon there won't be many folks not touched by autism in some way.

I'm not a mom, but I'll post about Autism on November 1st, if you'd like.
It's important to bring awareness to the issue.

I'll be blogging on Autism because I know a sweetie on the spectrum.

I agree that people need to be aware of this but instead of being so harsh like others don't care -- come at it a little more gently and more people would love to raise awareness. "You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar"
