  • Medical Marijuana Used To Treat Autism

My mother-in-law mentioned this to me on Facebook.  I was horrified at the thought, and didn’t do anything about it for a week.  I did some looking around and have found that some doctors are prescribing medicinal marijuana to children with autism.  I still think that it is wrong to do this, but that’s my opinion.  What’s yours?  Here is a video about parents that have used it with their child:

Would you use medical marijuana to treat your child with autism?

If you understood the science you wouldn't think twice about this treatment.  Research Glutamate and Autism.
There are Harvard doctors backing us up.
This isn't about "weed mellowing our kids out"
There is a scientific basis as to why this works --for autism, seizures and many other conditions -and best yet?? No side effect!!  The seizure pills I have to give my kid everyday are killing his liver.

Why WOULDN'T parents consider a safe alternative, that's what I WANT to know.
Please really look into this.  You will be pleasantly surprised.

I would do it in a heartbeat - I don't have a child though, so it's irrelevant at the moment.
This woman wrote a series of articles for Slate, interesting story about how and why she treats her son with medical marijuana

Also... her son was DYING.  Do you really think trying Medical Marijuana was wrong?
He was on deaths door!! As a parent, you would have done too, I guarantee it.

Stop thinking about marijuana as an "illict" drug --and remember that it is nothing more than a plant found growing in the wild that was villified and made illegal for political and tax reasons in the 70's

You want your kid to be a pothead?

Pretty much everyone I know smokes or has smoked pot.  None of them have psychosis or schizophrenia.  Weed helps so many people who have diseases that I couldn't imagine living with.  This is really awesome that she found something to help her son.  I think it's WAYYY better than her son taking 13 meds a day.  Taking 13 pills a day will screw up your body so much more than marijuana ever will.

Medical marijuana is a medication and just like anything other prescription drug, there are dosages. And although there are dosages, there has never been a case of overdosing on marijuana. There are also sativa blends and indica blends, each are prescribed as needed. There is a science behind it all, just like any other drug. Prohibition is useless, never serves its purpose, and escalates everything to a whole different playing field... where it gets dangerous for all parties involved.

If my child were autistic, I would not hesitate to do whatever it took to make their life easier. Besides, the reason why marijuana is illegal today is based on politics and racism... not because it ever killed anyone or was harmful. I don't think any doctor would advise you to pour your autistic child a shot of vodka everyday, yet the government wants you to believe that marijuana is more dangerous than alcohol. Complete BS. America needs to be smarter about the media and learn how to sift through the BS and find the truth.

    Just saying.

There's nothing wrong with marijuana, its a very pleasant drug for recreational use (is that the problem, that its enjoyable?) and it has many medical applications where that 'high' may or may not be present. Around here some people give young children whose asthma is bad enough to need hospitalisation and nebulizers, marijuana root tea every morning. It doesn't get them high, there isn't any of that ingredient in the root, but as a preventative it works.  Would you deny them that?  Do you think its ok because it doesn't get them high?  Would you object to it as an autism treatment if it didn't have any psychotropic effects?  Or would you still think that use of it will lead to drug addiction and crime, because Nancy Reagan and the Government said so?

Marijuana is NOT addictive and cannot cause other psychological problems. I have no idea why that lady would suggest such things. I don't understand why something that is not even toxic to the body and helps millions of people with real medical problems (such as autism) is seen in such a negative light. Especially when other drugs that are being prescribed have such serious side effects. I would definitely give my children medical marijuana if it was going to save their lives!!

uh yeah.. if it proves to be helpful then you're ignorant for not doing it.

  • Charmandy@xanga

theres nothing wrong with that!  it has so many medical possibilities!  those who disagree with this really need to look up the history of hemp.  it was thought to be the largest cash crop some day by the founders of America...but it fell into some negative light when alcohol and tobacco industries realized the threat and started the negativity.

i mean, its not like they have to smoke it.  make some edibles!  no harsh smoke, and completely safe <3

hemp is amazing, and im so happy that people are starting to see through the lies :D

I have very little expirience with Autistic people, But I do have ADHD, and clinical depression. And marijuana helps me calm down alottt..

Compare pot brownies with all the side effects of pharmiceuticals and tell me what is worse? Every pill I have been suggested has a high occurance of addiction and some major side effects. You can't overdose on marijuana and it won't cause any psychosis. There is just some really stupid negative stigma against pot which suckss

sounds like a plan to me. I'm going to give my kids pot to get them to shut up.

  • Kaeteesage

it is something i would look into do yall know that pot has never killed anybody ever, but people die everyday from cigeretts and complications from perscribed meds.

  • rainbowbrite721@xanga

Sounds crazy, but the drugs they are using to treat asthma have WAY worse

side-effects attributed to their use. I would give my kid marijuana over those medicines any day.
  • TheCaffeinatedKnitter@xanga

I agree with pretty much everyone here.  Faced with a choice between ritalin and MJ, I'd go with the pot.

  • imkrissy@xanga

I think it's interesting how you offer no argument as to why it is wrong. You simply think that it is wrong because of what the media has shoved down your throat. Medical marijuana can be beneficial to many suffering people for many different things. I.E. glaucoma, AIDS/HIV patients, cancer patients, etc. And what about all those nasty side effects you get from prescription pills? Oh yeah, not there because it's a plant.

  • starving__art1st@xanga

Alright.. I'm gunna tell you a little story here.

When i was 13 i developed bipolar disorder. My mother decided to medicate me with prescription SSRI's. From 14 to 18 i was given different pill after different pill. Sometimes i took as many as 13 pills at a time, all prescribed by my doctor. One night i ended up in the hospital with a very irritated liver as a result of carelessness by my doctor because he didn't bother to take my blood after upping my dose of lithium. Another night i found myself going through withdrawals because i was addicted to an antidepressant whose name i can't remember. They never told me i would have withdrawals. I hated antidepressants. I gained weight, lost my concentration, & went crazy. I can't remember a good part of those years.

I started self medicating with pot at 16. Steadily i was able to convince them to wean me off the antidepressants. Then they found out i was smoking & went nuts & upped the drugs again & took away the pot. I went crazy again. See the pattern here?

At 18 i went off antidepressants & turned back to pot. It was the best decision I've ever made. I've built up a tolerance so instead of falling asleep i can smoke a joint in the morning before work & go in & give a great performance. My mood is stable, my head is full of music instead of racing thoughts, & i can concentrate. Yes, sometimes i get the giggles. Yes, sometimes i eat quite a bit of food (though that really evens out the longer you take it). But i feel good & i'm happy. It makes me feel more stable & in control of myself & my life then any SSRI.

Pot is all natural. You can't overdose. You can't become addicted or withdraw from it. God created it. Nature created it. So why would you choose something created in a lab over something picked straight from the ground & dried? Seriously. You have no argument as to why you think it's wrong.

yeah...the guy above is but one example of marijuana doing a lot of good for someone (in addition to the many more comments above that).

all i want for society in this particular matter is that they look at MEDICAL marijuana use as at least just another option. just another prescription medication...and like any other medication, it is NOT for everyone. it will help some, it may even harm some others (although studies have been inconclusive about that. contradictory at best.)...but it IS a very viable, and helpful, option for many, many people.

also...for RECREATIONAL use...it is much, MUCH safer than almost any recreational substance, drug...hell, even ACTIVITY than most things out there. like anything, when done responsibly, there is no real harm involved in and of itself.

at the very worst, it leads to extreme unproductiveness...and yes, that can lead to many problems. believe me, i've seen pot EXPOSE many problems in many people. but that's the thing...people blame pot but it really isn't the problem. usually, the problem is a lack of self-control, or a lack of ambition, or a lack of self-esteem, whatever. i feel the equivalent would be me eating a bunch of junk food and blaming my obesity and high blood pressure and hypertension and diabetes and whatever else on the junk food.

bottom line? i'd really be a lot less annoyed about this particular matter if people were more open-minded and think more independently and critically about what exactly we're discussing. in the words of eminem, "mari-ju-wana is everywhere. where was you brought up?"

  • grEgs_bl0g@xanga

There's validity in her case. It altered her sons self destructive manners dramatically and has done positive affects. As the boy develops, there's more research that can be proven useful. Yes these symptoms from the pot are typical: getting the "munchies" and being mellowed out, but that's not the point.
If further research comes up comes up as not fully beneficial for autism. Then at least it's there and in use and it should be available and not be slandered or scrutinized, because here we did see valid positive outcome from the drug.

  • M_i_k_E_k_i_M@xanga

hell...it doesn't even have to be junk food. it could be the finest, grade A filet mignon...which is great. but you can't eat 12 lbs of that per week and expect to be just fine and dandy.
