  • A New Technique to assist in Spelling

We are slowly working on Annie’s spelling words. It was a real struggle at first until Annie’s teacher suggested a new technique.

We use a rainbow pen and write each letter of the word in a different colour* – Annie also says the letters outloud as she writes them down. Annie writes each words down four times and then fold the page over so she can not see the word and writes it from memory.

Amazingly this is working really really well. We work on 2-3 words over the week and by the end of that time they are firmly stuck in her memory.

Bonus side effect of practicing this way is that we get a little sneaky handwriting practice in at the same time

*A similar technique to that used by Maddy over at April 2010">Whitterer on Autism.

Ya know, I've been blessed myself and my sons have picked up on the ability to spell and memorize words. But, we used a similar technique (not the changing colors but the rest of it) for my oldest in the younger grades and it did work really well!

huh.. not autism related but i have auditory processing disorder so i had to do a lot of extra spelling groups and things like that. they made us draw boxes around every word because it was supposed to help us memorize the shape of the word. it didnt work at all haha. im glad theyve found something better. its funny the things they come up with.
