A Special Interest in Garage Doors
Jack's special interest right now is garage doors. We have no garage door at our house and his only access to garage doors from home is the computer. This week, I'm chronicling our experiment of allowing him to view garage doors on the computer. This is Day Two.
Jack wakes up and gets out of bed. He walks toward the dining room. I figure he's going to find a garage door remote or a set of keys, like he usually does, then return to bed.
Instead he heads straight for the computer. I hear the PC sing its welcome song and I get out of bed. Well, he's excited about garage doors. It's only Day Two of our big experiment of allowing him to view garage doors on YouTube at home. And that was right before bed. So he's excited. Don't start worrying yet, Mama.
I join him at the computer with his lemonade. We talk about the different garage doors. He likes the squeaky ones. I like the quiet ones.
He doesn't want to leave the computer, but I insist that he have breakfast without garage doors, then he can watch them after breakfast.
After breakfast, he rushes back to the computer. And he stays there.
I spend the day enticing him away from the computer. He doesn't want to leave, but once away, he's willing to play. Though he really wants to play garage doors, in which some music is the garage door noise and a wall is the garage door. Jack's idea is to push a button to turn the music on, then jump up and down in front of the wall while he imagines the garage door going up and down. As soon as he gets a break, he dashes back to the computer.
Sigh. It's going to be a long day.
Let's hope the day doesn't turn into weeks. Or months.
Has your child ever had an extended special interest in something like garage doors?

My son is obsessed with elevator videos, microwave videos and videos that have anything to do with control panels (ie. blinkers, fuel gauges, odometers etc.), particularly Jeep Cherokees because that's what sort of vehicle his older sister used to drive.
He's always been fascinated with elevators. When we were in Disney World we videotaped ourselves on some of the rides including the Tower of Tower. He watched those videos over and over until it evolved into finding Disney ride videos on You Tube. Since he's discovered he can watch them online, the obsession has only worsened to the point that he can't engage in any other activity without thinking about getting back on the computer.. His vocabulary is limited so many of our conversations consist of negotiations. "Eat first, (then) go see videos."
We've tried blocking and/or limiting the videos but eventually one of us gives in... Usually Dad when I'm not around, but Grandma and Grandpa get suckered into it when we go to visit them as well. I keep hoping he'll get tired of it someday but once he gets bored with one particular type of video, he quickly finds something else to obsess over.
All I can say is, when I don't let him have the videos for a long period of time and he gets past what I call the "withdrawal stage" he interacts and engages fairly well. Otherwise he could go all day without eating or speaking to another human being with no problem whatsoever.
My little brother is low functioning, which means his language ability is limited to a small vocabularly though he has incredibly high skills of listening/understanding.
His favorites? Exercise and spinning objects. He loves to jump on the trampoline at home (its military-grade and he STILL breaks the springs and the mesh of it!!!) and hike, climb on rocks, and swim (though he wont let anyone near him and can only wade around). AND he can spin any object imaginable. His favorites are hangers, but he's a boy so he can be a bit destructive, too (my parents constantly have to replace his hangers). I've seen him spin a plate on his finger many times (in the air).
When we take him shopping he likes to ride up and down the escalators.
In other words he acts like my 5 year old nephew. Everything fascinates him.

@Cirque_du_So_Lame@xanga - Jack had a mild fascination with elevators since, after all, they had doors and doors were his first love. We STILL have to watch every door open and close that we approach. But he's not interested in elevator videos. You know what we have done though in effort to associate people with enjoyable things like garage doors (or elevators)? We've built them out of everything imaginable: plates, cardboard, boxes, plastic box lids, and lots of duct tape. He gets to do something he loves and we get to interact with him.
@RookenThin@xanga - When Jack was younger, he LOVED spinning things. Everything! We were amazed he could do it (considering he also has cerebral palsy). Pot lids, plates, plastic lids. He was really good! We also have a mini trampoline, but he's outgrown it. We'd love to get a big one that's really bouncy.
I used to babysit for this autistic boy. He would always make me look "Lego Captain Jack Sparrow" up on youtube. It didn't matter what the video was; he would watch it. I think it has a lot to do with the audiovisual stimulation. The sounds & colors react with the pleasure centers of the brain. I think showing an interest like this is a good thing; if something captures his interest, try & use it to help him. For example, we could calm Gavin (the boy i babysat) down in an instant by asking him if he wanted to watch Captain Jack. It was also good for educational purposes.
