  • He Speaks!

As I’ve mentioned, Larry has been very talkative recently. For the most part he is babbling, responding to prompts, and echoing language that isn’t appropriate to the situation. These are all useful steps toward reaching full communication, so we reinforce and praise as appropriate. But twice this week, Larry has taken his talking a step further, and it has taken all my self-control not to shout it from the rooftops.

On Monday I accompanied Larry to a play-doh party at a neighbor’s house, where he had a ton of fun playing with the molds and being around a bunch of other kids.  When everyone went to eat, Larry and I went to the children’s study the family had established and began to look through books. While I was flipping through one of their children’s bibles, Larry grabbed a “My First Numbers” books off the shelf. He then proceeded to flip the pages (correctly, from front to back), and name the numbers he saw on each page. Then he got to the end and did it once more before returning to silently flipping through the pages of other books splayed around us.

Then yesterday we went to McDonalds. He was carrying around one of the brochures while I ordered the food and brought it to our table. Once we had sat and he had downed his first juicebox he looked up, pointed to the brochure, and said, as casually as if he did this sort of thing all the time, “Yellow at the top.” And he was right! The top of the brochure was in fact yellow.A few more times throughout the meal he stopped and repeated this action.

I had told his mom I could tell seven was going to be a big age for him. In all my dreams which involve him, he is speaking fluently, and although I don’t usually believe in dreams as prophecy, I certainly think it might be a possibility. Year seven is certainly getting off to a good start.
