  • Could Processed Food Be Contributing To The Increase In Autism?

We all know that eating too much sugar is bad for you, and most of us know that the insidious ingredient high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is really bad for you.  But I just learned HFCS can be really, really bad for you.

Apparently the process of manufacturing HFCS requires caustic soda, which is sometimes made using mercury, and a recent study found traces of mercury in about 1/3 of HFCS-containing products.  So not only is processed food making us fat, it may also be harming our brains, hearts, kidneys, lungs, and immune systems.

Could processed food be contributing to the recent increase in autism diagnoses? I hope that the activists who were instrumental in getting drug manufacturers to remove thimerisol/mercury from vaccines will be as invested in lobbying to rid our food supply of this toxic garbage.

    Much ado about nothing.

Just because it is "detectable" does not mean it is at unsafe levels. Furthermore the article you cited points out that the FORM of mercury is unknown; metal toxicity has many factors involved, and steric effects are part of the equation.

I hope the activists who were idiotic enough to assume that the mercury in vaccines posed an actual threat won't make the mistake of crying "wolf" here too, and CHOOSE to inform themselves about the ACTUAL science involved.

Much more research needs to be done on whether there really are more people with autism or more people being diagnosed with autism. There is a great deal of raw data available in some centre in the UK (sorry I forget the name, but they store all research material of everything medical and scientific), but, so far, it hasn't been correlated, or not as far as I know.

I too do wonder about the long-term effects of all sorts of food additives.
