  • Slogans, Metaphors and Sayings

For people with Asperger Syndrome…understanding a joke or a metaphor can be very difficult and most sayings will go unnoticed if you’re affected. Over the past few months I have actually been asking what they mean when I’ve seen, or heard them used and now I have a better understanding of them. They still didn’t make me laugh or anything as such but now I know what they mean I can use them.

” A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush “: It’s better to have a small actual advantage than the chance of a greater one.

” People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones “: You shouldn’t criticize people for having that same faults that you yourself may have.

“A penny saved is a penny earned “: By not spending money you’re saving money.

For more Idioms and their explanations, search for ‘Idioms’ in a search engine such as Google or just click here. If you hear someone say an idiom, metaphor, slogan or a saying…just ask them what they mean by it or if you want you can write it down and ask someone laster. Alternatively ask me and I will find out for you!

Don’t worry if you don’t understand a joke or find it funny: it’s something you need to learn to put up with. No one can blame you for not laughing at a joke. If you don’t understand it, you don’t understand it.

LOL... The people in glass houses reference is also to note that you can damage your own reputation (break your glass house) by making accusations (throwing stones) at other people. It is also about people who are subject to public scrutiny being careful to watch what they say about others.

I treat idiomatic speech like any other vocabulary words, trouble is when I catch a double meaning that makes me crack up laughing at an inappropriate moment.

I love this saying, "A penny saved is a penny earned", this saying has always been my model, I always save all that I can for any emergency or in the case I had a child.
