  • NeuroModulation a Respectful Healing of Autism

Some changes in Ryan through the NMT Autism Study by his mother:

Before the NMT Autism Study, Ryan got VERY upset if foods touched each other on his plate or if they were combined in any way. He also had a very short list of preferred foods and a very long list of foods he disliked and refused to eat. Now he eats more foods willingly and also isn't’t bothered if foods are combined or touching each other on the plate. One of his new favorite foods is my quiche which has lots of veggies in it that he wouldn’t dream of trying before. Now he begs for me to make it and eats more than his share of it.

Before the study, Ryan would get frustrated to the point where he was knocking over all of the desks and chairs in his classroom 3-5times per week as documented on his IEP (Individualized Educational Plan). NMT helped us understand that his frustration was mainly caused by his anxiety of his surroundings and new situations/ people. After several treatments focused on his anxiety/ frustration behaviors, he is able to get through most days without  knocking any desks and chairs over and when he does, he is able to recover quicker and get back on track. He’s now getting through entire weeks without knocking any desks or chairs over. Other weeks he’s only done it once, and only his desk and chair. Overall he just seems more at ease and at peace with himself. And when he does get anxious, he’s able to work through it better.

Before the study, it was a huge oppositional battle to get him to go anywhere (example: leave a situation/ environment, even if the new situation is one he’s been in before and knows is much more fun). He didnt ’want to go to the playground for recess at school. He resisted going to fun places with his family because of his anxiety. Now he loves recess at school and even though he still has some anxiety, it’s not quite as debilitating for him as it was before. Now he can be encouraged to go places willingly. Before he insisted on staying inside our house playing games or watching TV on weekends and now he enjoys being outside with the neighborhood kids.

One of his biggest challenges has always been being oppositional and defiant. This has improved to the point where I can sometimes just ask him directly to do something and he’ll just do it. Before the study we bsolutely positively had to use neutral phrases like “the clock says it’s time for…” or “the schedule says…” to get him to comply with any type of request/instruction at all and often even knowing the right way to ask him wasnt’enough to avoid and unpleasant confrontation. Now he can often respond appropriately to simple requests and directions. This makes life much easier on everyone and also opens up more opportunities for him. It means more people can work with him and get better results (soccer coaches, camp counselors, babysitters, etc.). He’s still oppositional and defiant, but on a much more manageable level.

Before the study, Ryan would often be in his own world, completely unaware of others around him. This happened any time he was engaged in anything. At one of our NMT visits, Dr. Schwartz and I were talking about his fear of the dark while he was busy playing his hand held video game. When he heard us talking he chimed in with “I’m not afraid of the dark anymore.”This is the first time he has EVER done this. He’s been displaying this new ability all over the place at home and at school, etc. It’s been weeks since I’ve noticed him in his own world.

Before the study Ryan did not like to perform at all. He has never sang or danced. Now he dances willingly and has fun doing it. I’ve even caught him singing songs. He’s also enjoying the act of reading us a story.
