Relationships and Asperger's
My boyfriend has Asperger’s. Nothing about this really intimidates or makes me nervous. I’ve known him and been close friends with him for two years and we became a couple a month ago.
I don’t really have a question, but I’m curious of hearing any stories about relationships involving Asperger’s.

What could you share about relationships involving people that have Aspergers?

A good friend of mine has Asperger's. His name is Drew. When he was diagnosed, his family watched an informational video that stated people with autism shouldn't date until their adults. 0.o
Regardless, his girlfriend is his best friend dating back many years. They are now juniors in high school, and met in seventh grade. Drew met Em when his family moved to a suburb in Wisconsin from St. Louis. Em was the first classmate to befriend him, though she had multiple boyfriends in the early years of their friendship. Drew had a girlfriend his freshman year, as well. When they broke it off, he aknowledged his true feelings for Em.
Unfortunately, Em moved to another town sophomore year. Neither of them have driver's licenses. It is not uncommon for Drew to bike the long distance on half-days of school. He loves country music andplays songs for Em- some that he has written. Em is a tom boy. She loves camping, horseback riding, and rock climbing. Drew likes to plan their "adventures", and constantly ask for mine and others approval. He wants to make sure that she absoluely LOVES whatever he has planned.
Did you want the perspectives from the neurotypical person or the person with Asperger's?
If it doesn't matter then I can tell you, I've been diagnosed with Asperger's and have had romatic relationships for years. I had my first "boyfriend" when I was about five! LOL He had a crush on me but mom told me I was too young.. I was in kindergarten and remember having to stay home for a week while they were do developmental milestone testing (this was on an air force base) and during the whole week, as I sat at the dining room table during the day to practice my handwriting (which was horrible), he would sit outside our dining room sliding glass door in our yard and stare in at me. He was about eight or nine. My mom tried her best to shoo him away but he was persistent. But that was my first experience..
I dated for real when I got older, and I had silly crushes on people but struggled with making the first "move" for friendships never mind romatic relationships. The people I tended to like were also shy. I think that was because for the longest time I was intimidated by out-going, boisterous people. But that changed when I got to adulthood.
I've been married twice now (my first husband commited suicide) and I have two sons, also on the spectrum. My second marriage has gone much better but I think it's because he learned about autism and understood more than my first husband ever tried to understand. My current husband, God bless him, is so very patient with me and when I say something that sounds rude or not quite right, he will ask questions about what I really mean and not just assume I really meant to be rude... same with my sons.
I'm not sure why someone would suggest that a person with autism should wait until adulthood to date. I think maybe that should be true of anyone :) Of course, I have only held that opinion since I became a mom! :)
I have Aspergers. I have been married for nearly 30 years. I think our marriage works because my wife knows her strengths and my weakness and organises things accordingly.
She has given up on expecting me to understand romance but finds my attempts to grasp the concept amusing. On the other hand I am honest and loyal (supportive if made aware of a need to be) almost never late.
Every relationship involves give and take but some of us need to have things pointed clearly pointed out to us. I am perfectly willing to do things but it doesn't always occur to me to do them.
I haven't got a formal diagnosis... mine is second hand through similarities between myself and my son... I would actually say that I'm "worse" than he is... but both of us are growing... learning about AS has helped me purposefully fix some of the things I've had a whole lot of trouble with. Knowing that I have to do them on purpose for a reason has helped a lot.
I've been married for almost 12 years now. The first six years were very rough. But it wasn't just because I have AS... my husband had plenty of his own issues to deal with, and in a lot of ways, I think having AS helped me be the right person to help him deal with those issues. After those first six years, and both John and I realizing that we needed to work on things... our last six years have been pretty good. (Even though some really horrible things have happened... like my mom and grandmother dying within six months of each other and his dad dying about two years after that.)
I am not the easiest person on the planet to live with. I've got some crazy idiosycracies (like needing absolute quiet and dark to sleep) that John has to put up with... and he does some things (like snoring) that drive me up the wall... but for the most part, we complement each other nicely. He knows to look out for me. Sometimes I need him to explain himself or other people's jokes or translate the garbled mess I hear because I have some auditory processing problems. But we've learned to work with each other, and it's been pretty good.
Seeing your personal info, you say you enjoy sarcasm, making people laugh, and don't keep a schedule. Most aspies take everything literally so they take sarcasm seriously. Similarly, many won't share or understand your sense of humour. Some also prefer the pattern of a regular schedule.
Many aspies have difficulty communicating feelings and emotions and picking up on your facial or body expressions. So if you're gonna be upset when he doesn't seem to be paying attention to your moods or picking up on your subtle hints, you may be disappointed often. If he states things somewhat bluntly or awkwardly about you, he might see it as being matter of fact, and not really critical. So ask questions, before taking offence. Similarly, if he rambles on about a pet interest, he probably won't take offence if you change the subject. If you're in a group, don't be rude and say, "No one is interested in that," since obviously your statement would be false since he knows that he is interested in whatever.
If you get more serious someday, you may want to get married, but he may not seem to be making any moves. He may be in a rut and just need prodding. He's more likely to take direct questions without feeling scared off than most guys, so if he isn't ready and you ask him when he thinks he'd be ready to get married, you likely won't scare him off forever.
In other words you need to be a skilled communicator to keep the relationship working best. If you are being sarcastic, you may need to use some obvious signal like blinking, and make sure that he knows that it's the signal and consistently use it. Don't read things into what he says, listen to what he says and ask direct questions before getting upset with him. Don't be too subtle when you talk, speak simply and directly. I guess I could summarise that even more: Don't read between the lines and don't assume that he can/should/will read between the lines either.
