Homework Meltdown
Yesterday was another difficult day for homework. I don't know what makes some days easy and some days hard. During one of Jonathan's times in his room to "calm down" from a meltdown, it got quite for a long period of time. I called up from the bottom of the stairs. His bedroom door was closed which is unusual.
"Jonathan are you starting on your homework?"
"No. I'm writing a letter."
He came down to the kitchen about five minutes later and handed me a scrap piece of paper folded up into a cross between a paper airplane and a cootie catcher.
"Is this to me?'
"No it is to my teacher."
I unfolded it and read:
Jonathan H.
10/14/09Dear __________
I refus to do my homework because I havet to go to school for 8 sinken hours!!!!!!!!!!! Why the heck must I do school work at home?
from, Jonathan How@P.S. I'm NEVER doing homework agan and nobody will stop me!!
(all errors are his)After I read the note, I couldn't help but chuckle as I said, "This is very nice. Now are you ready to start your homework?"
It took another hour or so to get the homework done. By the end, Dad had come home and fought the last battle (I had enough by then). When things were calmer, I suggested Jonathan write a letter to the principal and school board. I told him I'd help him research on the Internet some of the studies which state homework at his grade level doesn't provide any extra benefits to the children.
We'll see if he's motivated to do this. He might be because our neighbor is an elected school board member and Jonathan knows him pretty well. Regardless, I told Jonathan that unless he does something proactive to change what he doesn't like, I don't want any more meltdowns over homework.

Jonathan...we are rooting for you! I hope you find the information you need to ban homework! Our Sky hates homework too.
I think you are right and I believe in this cause - no more homework.
It sure would make my life easier.
The only problem I found with homework was that someone else was choosing what I was to do and I didn't always want to do it. If I could have set my own homework it would have been done more willingly.
I think he's right. 8 hours a day is enough for a kid. Not many people who work in offices for 8 hours a day expect to have to take work home as well.
My kid was homeschooled for a year, there were three kids at two different grade levels and one teacher and the whole curriculum was covered in four hours (including one hour's 'homework'). Schools should be able to do that in eight hours.
