This is horrible...I got teary hearing this. This is why I'm 1000% FOR vaccines. The small chances of getting side affects are nothing compared to dying from a disease that's nearly eradicated or treatable in less severe forms. Senseless deaths from non-vaccinated diseases hurt more than the person involved because they can be carriers & infect others who are next yet old enough to get the vaccines, which is why schools require paperwork. I had all my shots at 17 but when I moved & had to go to a new school, they wouldnt let me set foot in there until I showed proof on state approved documents & rightfully so. As someone who got sick with something that could have been prevented by someone's kid getting treated, I know how important vaccines & proper treatments are.
I'm not saying parents who dont vaccinate are terrible because it's their choice & some small percentage of people can go without vaccines but I strongly urge them to see how much it affects others, not just themselves. I do agree that they should consider changing the formula to make them more hypoallergenic but I would never keep a child from getting something that can save their lives.
I can appreciate what you are saying but I am sorry I have to disagree. As a parent of a child who was perfectly developing prior to the MMR shot and took a 180 degree turn for the worst. I must say that I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that my daughter's Autism was caused by that shot!! Within one week of beig administered the MMR shot she was in the hospital with SEVERE grand mal seizures and during our first stay in the hospital, spun for 4 HOURS straight without stopping, in an exersaucer!! It was during that stay that the Dr. wrote AUTISM? in her hospital file. She had previously had 15 to 20 words on her first birthday, a week earlier, and she lost ALL of her words immediately following her hospital stay! During the following 5 years we tried many therapies and much one- on- one interaction and play dates with both typical and special needs peers. She did show alot of progress, slow but sure. Ultimately her life was cut short because of her lack of fear of danger... she ran out into the highway at 10:00pm on a November night and was struck and killed by an oncoming truck that couldn't stop, at the very tender age of 6 YEARS OLD. Needless to say I feel pretty certain that my daughter would have never run out into the highway at 10:00 at night at 6years old had she not had Autism!! Because most 6 year olds would be scared to go outside at 10:00 at night alone, much less to run out into the street!! So to wrap it up I will just say that I don't think that vaccinations should be mandatory, I think that it should be up to the parent as to whether or not their child receives them. Until they make them totally mercury free and totally safe I will never give one to a child of mine nor would I recommend anyone else give them to their children without first researching it at great length! I am sorry you got something that should have been prevented by a shot, but that proves one other thing I have felt in the past, those shots aren't as effective as they want everyone to believe. This past fall in Jefferson County Kentucky several school children all of which had been vaccinated came down with Measles also shooting holes in the theory that those shots are 100% effective!
@Karen - The study that first linked vaccines to autism was fully retracted this week. There has been a rise in the rate of autism diagnoses even though mercury was removed from vaccines several years ago. There has also been a rise in the rate of children dying of serious, preventable illnesses since that study was first published.
This was so sad. I have to say, that YES I am all for vaccinations. I do not think that vaccines are linked to autism, but even if they were, I would prefer my child to be autistic than dead. These are chances we take, and I would take life for them over any option. And obviously this isn't scientifically backed or proved at all, but I have a feeling that the chemicals we expose our children to have a much greater chance at harming their healthy development than medicine. Of course having a child vaccinated is a parent's choice.. We can only do the best we can.
I'm so sorry for what you have gone through Karen. That must be so difficult. I am sorry you believe it's directly related to an immunization. :( And fwiw, no one has EVER said immunizations/vaccinations are 100%. Ever.

Demonstrate the validity of your claim besides being lazy enough to commit a correlation-causation fallacy.
@Karen - My personal theory, based on medical research, that autism is a "trigger" disease, much like things like transverse myelitis, or numerous chronic autoimmune conditions. These conditions pop up when the body is under stress: surgery, car accident, death in the family, pregnancy, and yes, vaccination. The disease is dormant, and it will show up the first time one of many stressors occurs. For children, most often the stressor is vaccination. I believe fully that these children would still develop autism either way - it's just that vaccination is often the most common bodily stress that occurs in a child's life. I am very sorry for your child and for what you had to go through, but many vaccines no longer contain mercury, and scientists have disproven the link between mercury and autism.
Thimerosal never caused authism. Authism has been here since the dawn of mankind, only that people didn't knew what it was back then and thought people who had it were possesed (same goes for epilepsy). Authism is hereditary, and it is an oportunistic disease. It attacks when stress lowers the body's defenses (even if it isn't infectocontagious). One stressing condition is poisoning, and there is evidence showing that many kids who developed authism live next to industrial sites or ate shit that was contaminated with methylmercury like sea food; which makes perfect sense due to the fact that this kind of mercury attacks the nervous system in a very savage way.
That was a sad story. IMO, when I have children, I'd rather get them vaccinated than have them die of diseases that used to kill children at the turn of the century. Hey, if you want your kid to get measles and mumps, go for it. If you want them to get diptheria, go for it. I think this is a case where benefits completely outweigh the risks. I don't want to have my children die because of my irresponsiblity as a parent to prevent a disease.
This is why I'm 100% for vaccinations. I would much rather have an autistic child than a dead one. If my child were to die anyway, I would at least take solace in knowing I'd done everything I could, rather than to have sat by and done nothing to prevent it.
Hmmm, I guess I'm the lone dissenter here when I say if I were to have died after non-vaccination, so be it. Living with autism sucks, and quite frankly, my quality of life for the most part is so low (not by choice), I might as well just be dead.
Think of someone other than yourself for a change. Yeah, it hurts to lose someone, but what kind of sadistic person would rather someone live a life whose quality is so crappy they can barely function vs. not being alive at all? To be honest I'm surprised I'm still alive after three suicide attempts (all attempted over that very reason).....
theres nothing written there. it says the title, then it says 'warning very sad' and thats it
@Karen - That's Big Pharma for you. Thanks for validating why I can't stand the pharmaceutical/medical industry. Greedy, hypocritical salesman snakes is all they are.
@whitetrashpoet@xanga - I totally agree with you. That would explain why an allergic reaction, illness or injury can also lead to the onset of autism. Do you happen to have links or titles of articles or any research in that direction to share?
R.I.P to that little girl.
It's horrible the effect that the opinion of an arrogant doctor can lead to this sort of thing.
