  • Xavi's 1 year check up - No MMR shot

First off, for those that don't know, we call Xavier Xavi (pronounced Zavey).  There is a whole story about why his name is pronounced Zavier and not "x"avier, but that is for a different day since it involves my husband and lots of labor medication.

Today was his 1 year check up and it went well.  I do not love our doctor's office, we have very little choice with my husband's National Guard insurance.  Not that I am complaining, we have great coverage. And for a scary month when we moved we had no insurance and I can't imagine how people go without.  So trust me, I am happy to have what we have! I made sure to get the good doctor today.  He is also very on top of Jaylen's troubles already and has really given me a lot of help and referrals to Yale/New Haven (a great medical facility for Jaylen).

Xavier is very tall.  Off the charts in fact.  I'm thinking Michael Jordan...

The one downer was when vaccination time came.  Don't worry, I am not going into the debate.  I do not pass judgement on others either way, and do not care to even get involved in the whole mess.  Just please accept my decision to not do all vaccinations.  I am not convinced either way when it comes to the vaccine and Autism link, but have decided the boys will not get their MMRs anymore.  As I said, that is my personal choice, I can only imagine what people are thinking.  Why that one? Do you really think ___? What if he gets rubella?  I know, I know, but it is what it is.  And unless you have been in my shoes, it is hard to make the decision.

Having a child with Autism is a daily struggle on so many levels.  Sometimes my head feels like it will actually explode from all the research, therapy, behavior issues, tantrums, insurance issues, treatments, prevention, and worst of all guilt.  Guilt I did this somehow.  Guilt that I could be doing more.

Wow, that was an extreme tangent.  Back to the point. So when I say "no MMR" the doctor gives me the usual look that says "oh no, you're one of those."  I explained that I do not even being to think I know more than him about anything medical, but ask that he respects my decision.  And...drumroll...he does.  No fight.  But he does sneak in that he agrees to not give it because of Xavi's past reactions to eggs.  Eggs are used to make several vaccines.  We disagree on the reason, but agree not to do it. Yea!

All in all, a good check up.  Oh, except that Xavi still does not say any words.  But I was totally expecting this from the day Jaylen was diagnosed and I looked down at my already pregnant with Xavier belly.  Par for the course.  Bring on the evaluations!!!!

Sigh. We don't know about the MMR parents, we only know that Sky never smiled. Our infant lay in his crib staring at his mobile or the fan. He only cried for food. We sensed a problem. Yes, he did seem to lose some language at 18 months, but we already knew he was different. (One thing he never lost was the ability to read letters and even some words. This developed at aobut 14 months! Did he converse, say mama, papa or look us in the eye? No.

Yeah... Josh could work the VCR at ten months old and knew which of his tapes were what, even without their covers... but didn't say an understandable word until he was almost two. Hearing problems were ruled out, since he would startle at some of the smallest noises. He knew his numbers when he was about 15 months old. He could point to which number was what, but by 18 mos. he had three words, "keys" "mui mui" (milk) and "dashoo" (thank you). We figured out "dashoo" only after about two weeks of wondering what in the world he was trying to say. We thought he was saying his name, but then we caught on that he'd say it when someone would give him something or when he wanted something. Then all the sudden, he started quoting entire chunks of the videos he liked to watch. It's like he went from zero to sixty talking up a storm... but not SAYING anything.
