There is a lot of talk regarding the unpleasant exchanges brought on by a shopping mall melt-down of an ASD child.
I'm guessing here but I'd say there is an overall decrease in simple common courtesy and lack of basic manners in the community at large.
It's all around us and it's quite disturbing. The interesting thing is that we continue to work on etiquette skills with Daniel. "Say please", "say excuse me", "wait your turn."
It almost seems contradictory at this point because there is little reciprocal behavior to reinforce the prompted civility.
It's so annoying that I find myself muttering under my breath, "excuse you", "NO thank you for NOT holding the door open for us", "Yeah, sure you go ahead and cut in line."
It may very well be the time for us not only to teach our children respect and decency but maybe some adults in society could take a page from the autism teaching manual, maybe a little social skills training.
