Conversations about Poop
Sometimes the changes around us, in front of us, are so subtle or so long in their metamorphosis, we fail to see them. All of us do this; it’s been most current for Zach and I.Lately, we’ve had a lot of people commenting to us about how much Alex is talking. That he talks and talks, clearly, and they can actually have somewhat of a conversation with him. We always seem taken aback for whatever reason…really? You think he’s talking a lot? Oh…yea, I guess you’re right. We hadn’t realized that.
Yet we have, if we think about it. Yes, he’s changed a great deal. Yes, he does talk a whole bunch more than we’re used to. He’s bloomed, exploded really in the release of his personality at school. He’s much, much happier than he used to be.Maybe we’re focused on the wrong things? Maybe just other things? We’ve been so completely focused on his behavior, his impulse control, his rages where he seems to disappear, consumed by the anger suddenly burning inside, that we’ve missed the big changes he’s already made.
How he’s been able to have conversations with his sister, conversations that are amusing to listen to. Insightful and hilarious in the scheme of what you’d expect a conversation to sound like.
“Alex, you like??? right. I like ???” Though part of what Violet’s saying I can’t hear, she’s emphatically nodding her head yes, waiting for Alex’s reaction.
“No.” (dragged out) Looking at her, then pausing to turn away.
“No. I don’t like poop.”
I cracked up. “No, I don’t like poop either Alex” I said.
Yes, I guess there have been some changes.
Have a great weekend!
