Melatonin Madness
Dear autism,
Melatonin used to be our best friend. In the weeks right after diagnosis, that 1 mg wonderpill used to make the screaming and spinning go away…after waiting the prescribed 20-30 minutes of course. I looked forward to that part of the routine. Nowadays, we’ve gotten up to 3mg and well, let’s just say melatonin had us up til 2am last night (correction THIS morning). I don’t appreciate you turning our friend against us like this. You have YET AGAIN ruined a beautiful friendship. SIGH. We’re going back to the drawing board…Our doc says that melatonin might be lonely and wants to introduce us to his new friend magnesium…we’re still gonna beat you by the way. Just FYI.

HUGS we used to love melatonin as well - still do for the teen ( he is ADD only) as for my 10 year old aspie we stopped the melatoning when his doc switched him to risperidal last year for a mood component of his challenges. In defense of that - I adore this doctor - before him my Alex was on 12 pills a day, was "drugged or stoned" and most of the time they didn't work. Now he takes three pills a day - Vyvanse, lexapro and the risperidal and they work like a charm. The risperidal we increase and decrease as needed - fall and spring are his tough times!
I hope the magnisium works well for you as well - ohhh almost forogt - one of the effects of the risperidal ? He is in bed sound asleep within the hour!
