  • Great Strides

One good and solid week of virtually behavior free living in our home has just passed and this is exciting.

Daniel has been a giggly and happy kid the entire time. When it was time to get up for school he got up, when he wanted a reward he worked for it without protest. When the answer was no he took it in stride and when I asked for a hug it was received without caution. .

I have to believe that soon there will be inquiries from the school staff and other parents about what new drug he is taking. Well, there are no drugs, no new herbal supplement or diet regimen, no new therapy and nothing special has happened to explain this change in his demeanor. I can only say that we have been blessed with a lovely and uneventful week that is worthy of repeating.

I guess we have fallen into a pattern of expecting the fall to break our steady stride rather than look at the sun to break through the clouds. It’s unfortunate but when the good days lingered for more than 2 or 3 I went into a duck and cover mode expecting it to all hit the fan once again. It’s a terrible habit I have formed and I must break it immediately. I accept this good week for what it is and expect to continue in the days ahead. I will not let anything break our great strides toward the light at the end of the tunnel.

Yeah!!! Daniel is still doing well since the original post was done over a month ago.. If you had seen where we were only a year ago you would be amazed at what God has done in our lives. Daniel, although not free of autism is experiencing a better quality of life these days with much less anxiety and consequently less and less maladaptive behavior.

He spoke one of the most lengthy and appropriate sentences yesterday as we drove to school. "It's too cold, roll the windows up." seven, count them, seven words. He will be 14 in January and from the age of 4 has only spoken in 1 to 3 word phrases so this was like hearing him give a 5 minute speech on meteorology. And Yes!!! We rolled the windows up. :)
