Rumor Has It
The rumor has it that things may not be so sweet in the special needs sector of our school. As more special needs students enter and the room is at its capacity, one has to wonder what limits are stretched for all the staff there. As more special needs students enter, one in particular’s siblings report that there’s not wonderful interactions with other SSN Students (Significant Special Needs – like Alex) and staff. Staff are reportedly unnecessarily harsh, rude, disrespectful. Can this be so?
Part of me is very concerned. Concerned because I can’t communicate with my son enough to understand exactly what his day entails. To understand exactly what it is he experiences, how people treat him, if he feels put down, laughed at, humiliated. I have to trust that the people whose care we leave him in will support and guide him as if he were their own. As if his future, as if their future were dependent upon his meeting his individual goals.
The questions raised were valid. Reasonable. Questionable for what’s going on in the school. I have an idea of who they were speaking to, who they were speaking about. But it’s not okay.
We have two staff that we’re comfortable with; comfortable enough to believe that they would never harm our son in any way. All have a clear understanding that we’re advocates, parents to be dealt with, not passively sitting by allowing our son to be blindly placed in their care.
One in particular we can communicate with at length. We will do so. We will do our own form of investigation. We will continue to advocate and protect our son.
May they hold on to their skivvies if these rumors are found to be true….regardless of whose child these rumors are about, all children deserve, demand, need protection.
