An Angel At His Side
When Daniel was about 7 months old and sitting up in his high chair I would notice on occasion that he would burst into a spontaneous smile and sometimes even laughter. He was not smiling at me as he was looking just to my left and beyond my position in the chair before him. I would say “what are you looking at bubba?” and then glance behind me, always seeing nothing except the light beaming through the shutter covered window. I would look at him and ask, “did your angel come to visit you today?”, “did she say something funny?” I guess now with my knowledge of autism I could dismiss this as just an unusual response to stimuli but I like the idea of Daniel having his visiting angel. A presence that can comfort him when mom just isn’t getting it right. A force that guides him when he’s feeling lost in a cluttered world. A friend who can bring a smile to his lips or a giggle to his voice when he’s feeling alone.
To this day when I see that spontaneous smile or hear the giggling sounds of a happy boy I choose to envision an angel sent especially from God, seated at Daniel’s side. An Angel that has been there from the beginning and will be there in the present and to forever and ever.
