  • We Will Not Live Forever

We feel it, we want it and at some point we may declare it, “I need to live forever” It is that passionate plea, subconsciously prayed to God that we must stay on this earth as long as our children are alive. Well, unfortunately and statistically it’s not likely to happen. So now what??

First I would say that this realization should be the driving force behind all parents to work their butts off in getting their children where they need to be to live as independent a life as possible. Pick your strategy, your protocol and devices whatever they are and get moving towards the goal. It is our responsibility. We can not fall back on a hope or a promise that someone else will pick up the torch when we pass on. We can not burden our own sisters, brothers and the most often looked to siblings to take on the task of caring for our disabled child. You may be blessed and they may not feel burdened when offering this admirable pronouncement of intent, but things change, people’s lives change so we can not rest on what is written into a legal document.

Looking at the bigger picture we have only a modicum of control over the situation while we are alive and there are surely no guarantees what will happen when we are gone so all the more reason to act as if tomorrow was the last day as the guardian and protector of our most precious possession.

While planning for the future we need to make each moment in this present count..
