• Book Review: Educating Esme

  I had the chance to read and review the book Educating Esme’ – Diary Of A Teachers First Year by Esme’ Raji Codell. I read the book start to finish and I highly recommend it.

  Educating Esme’ was first published in 1999. Esme’ Raji Codell has won three awards for this book. The awards are: American Library Associations Alex Award, Forward Magazine’s Memoir of the Year, First Place for National Education Reporting from the Education Writers Association.

  I couldn’t stop to put this book down once I started reading it. It was fantastic. I always had to find out what was going to happen next. I love how honest and spunky Esme’ is. She is also very creative in how she taught the kids. I thought it was amazing and wished I had that kind of teacher for my son.

  I love how everyone calls her Madame. It’s also Esme’s nickname. I like how she kept at keeping it even though the principal didn’t like it. I liked her spunk in standing up for herself.

  Esme’s first year was taught in an inner city school in Chicago. It was a newly built public school. She taught fifth grade. 
  

  While reading I thought at first how is she going to teach a bunch of kids with bad attitudes. You will be amazed at her charm with the kids. The kids respected her and the parents loved her! I am truly amazed at the difference she has made in the kids. That really says to me what wonderful teacher she is. When someone can impact a child’s life like she does..ahhh I don’t want to spoil the book for you…LOL So your going to have to pick it up and read it for yourself.

  I loved the supplementary guide to help new teachers. When I was homeschooling some of the tips could have came in handy for me. I know had I read this book back then I would have been truly inspired and may have done things differently.  The tips are very useful!

  I really enjoyed the forward and aftword. The forward was written by Katherine Paterson author of Bridge to Terabithia and the aftword was written by Jim Trelease author of The Read-Aloud Handbook.

  I have recommended this book to friends here in town and I think they are going to be just as hooked as I was. I know I went into detail about the book and it caught their interest. So it will be interesting to find out if they agree with me.
