Many people ask me what it's like to be a Father of a boy who has Autism. My pat response is usually, "it's parenting squared. We do the same things that parents of "normal" children to...and then some extra stuff."
It's difficult to describe Autism, after all, Autism is really a spectrum. Each person with Autism is different...and no two people with Autism are exactly the same.
However, there's a few similarities....
There's not that much information out there that could really put things into perspective for friends and family that don't understand what living with this disorder is all about. And the internet is ripe with various opinions in regards to treatments available...
And like the disorder being a spectrum, so are the treatments...no one main treatment works for all that deal with the disorder.
As an Editor for Autisable.com, I was contacted by someone who likes the site, and what we've done with The Horse Boy movie promotion. I was offered another movie to view, and see if I'd be interested in promoting this other movie in the near future. Of course I jumped at the chance.
It's called, The Sunshine Boy. And all I have to say is that it puts to film many of the struggles and triumphs that several people have gone through. It's a documentary, chronicling the journey of one mom's quest to learn more about Autism...from those who are experts in the field.
Within the first 40 minutes, I had more of an understanding of the complexity of the Autism Spectrum then ever before....and I've been learning about it for several years.
Here's a Trailer for the movie:
Again, it's not yet released in the United States...but when it does, I sure hope many people see it/rent it/watch it.
The Sunshine Boy brings light into the world of Autism, and into your heart. A definite must see.
Hopefully San Diego will be one of the cities it makes it's way to. It looks like it will be gut wrenching but informative at the same time. Real life autism, no hollywood actors. Finally!!
Am looking forward to seeing this movie when it comes to Canada or hopefully when we can purchase a DVD. I think it will be one of those movies we all watch repeatedly.
Since it may only appear in a limited number of cities, I hope they plan to make the CD widely available.
Though...it would be incredible if entire populations (you know, available in a movie theater near you) wanted to learn about what a spectrum or syndrome is and then what autism is.
Yes, part of exploring autism becomes exploring these concepts. It's difficult for most to even begin to wrap their heads around the idea of spectrums, especially when they're best illustrated in a 3D manner rather than in a linear representation.
About Me: Yeah, I'm "That Guy" that has the BFN Online Store that sells Official Xanga.com stuff. I also have the BFN Toolbar, connecting Xangans and providing embeddable content to blogs/sites. You can follow me on Twitter at http://twitter.com/edlives. I'm also a father of an autistic child, and a site editor for Autisable.com
