I went to college with a girl who had Autism. She was gifted at prayer. When she would pray during our bible study meetings, it would sound like lyrics to beautiful music, like poetry.
When I saw Rainman, I started saying "There but for the grace of God go I." I walked a line, a verbal autistic at a very young age, undiagnosed and forced to make it through 'the system' without help, spent my adult life connecting the dots and learning I am gifted with communication, and now I see the world as being FULL of people like me, because all you people are bouncing your cell phone calls off satellites and using the internet-- where do you think these things came from? Our society is just now putting a finger on the mental diversity and how intolerant we've been of 'nonnormals'. Even the deaf are still being rescued out of institutions, and they're just as capable as anyone, but since we are not a signing society, we don't make room for them. I think as we progress onward, we will realize that mental diversity is what has made civilization possible in the first place.
@bluejacky@xanga - you don't want their help. They would have trapped you, and you wouldn't have been able to grow at all age-wise and a lot of the adult teachers don't know how to do anything at all. Looking back, it was pathetic. It allowed people who were abusing me to have more power. I'm nearly useless now because I don't care anymore and I developed schizophrenia or something; I think from stress.
Actually, in the beginning, people were more tolerant of disabilities. They used them to do all sorts of things. Our society neglects to notice the potential of certain individuals, wasteful. We norm everything because reality is "supposed" to be a certain way.
And in my anthropology book, there was one female with a severe developmental delay who made it to a healthy age in a primitive society where there were other daily threats, such as animal attacks and short food supplies.
