  • Best Buddies

"... there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother."  Prov 18:24

Best Buddies", a club for compassionate, excelled, upper class students to become a friend and mentor to special needs students.  They eat lunch with them, hang out together and become a phone friend to unload their problems and frustrations to.

About once a month all the Best Buddies do something as a group.  Today they did the 5K Dash.  They met at the school at 7:45 this morning the buddies and their mentors went by vans to Indianapolis to run trails along White River.  Every one got a best buddy tee shirt which identified them as part of the group.   Then and they came back to a local park where they had a cookout.

This is an international club.  There were Best Buddies from high schools all over Indiana meeting for the 5K Dash in Indianapolis today.  The buddies don't stop mentoring after high school graduation but many continue with their special buddies long after high school helping with the transition into adulthood.

My 16 year old woke me at 4:00 this morning to tell me she was so excited she couldn't sleep and wondered if it was time to get up and get ready for the 5K Dash.  I told her, "NO! Go back to sleep!" At 6:00 this morning she woke me again.  I told her to let me sleep for another half hr.  Finally the moment arrived when she and her sisters, who are all in Best Buddies, were dropped off at school and heading off for the exciting day!

This is such a great social experience for Asperger kids who are very lacking in social skills.   Parents who are looking for social help for your Asperger children, inquire at your high school about Best Buddies, or help get a chapter started in your high school.  Everyone benefits!
